2010 AFL SEASON
AFL FOOTBALL PREVIEW & TIPS
FINALS WEEK 1
GEELONG V ST.KILDA
This has become one of the great rivalries in modern footy. Ever since the Cats and Saints did battle in the pre-season decider back in 2004, the two teams have spent most of their time near the top of the ladder and have staged some great contests, none better than last year’s grand final. On that day, Geelong prevailed by 12 points, despite St Kilda having dominated large parts of the game. The result handed the Cats their second premiership in three years and left the Saints rueing many missed opportunities. This latest meeting should be another beauty, with both sides in form and untroubled by serious injuries. Last time they met, in round 13, St Kilda choked Geelong in the midfield so effectively that the Saints held the Cats goalless in the second half. With more wet weather predicted, expect similar tactics but also expect Geelong to handle them better.
TIP : GEELONG
FREMANTLE V HAWTHORN
The round 21 result between these sides can be completely discounted. The real fallout from that match can be seen in Fremantle’s rested top-line players, who haven’t travelled for a month. That, and Sandilands, is where Fremantle can gain its advantage, with a raucous home crowd sure to factor in a tight and tough match.
TIP : HAWTHORN
COLLINGWOOD V WESTERN BULLDOGS
The Magpies have suffered a reality check over the past two weeks with their inaccurate kicking and the pressure of Adelaide and Hawthorn restricting their ball movement and scoring. However, with a few players set to come in and the intensity to skyrocket, the Dogs might struggle to keep up given their depleted side and the Magpies’ ability to run and quickly move the ball.
TIP : COLLINGWOOD
SYDNEY V CARLTON
If this game was at the SCG you would tip the Swans with greater confidence, but they should still get over the line. They’ve played the better footy over the past month while the Blues have been patchy at best. Carlton’s best chance is to use its leg speed on the larger ground to break the game open, but you fancy the Swans will be able to do enough.
TIP : SYDNEY
